Why Marine Surfaces Need Marine Products
Boats are built from materials that don't exist in your house: gelcoat (polyester resin), Strataglass (optical-clarity vinyl windows), Sunbrella (solution-dyed acrylic canvas), marine-grade vinyl (UV-stabilized upholstery), and anodized aluminum (trim, rails, towers). Each material has specific chemical tolerances, and products that work perfectly on household surfaces can damage marine materials permanently.
The consequences of using the wrong cleaner range from cosmetic (clouded vinyl windows that never fully recover) to structural (gelcoat oxidation that exposes the fiberglass laminate to moisture). Knowing which products are safe for which surfaces protects your investment and keeps the boat looking sharp without inadvertent damage.
Gelcoat Care
Gelcoat is the glossy, pigmented resin shell on fiberglass boats. It's durable but not indestructible. Safe cleaners include mild dish soap for routine washing, marine-specific hull cleaners for stains and waterline buildup, and marine polishing compounds for oxidation.
