Your boat may have come with a factory tow point, or it may have nothing more than a pair of stern cleats that were never designed for towing a rider. Either way, setting up a proper tow point is the first step before any water sports activity. This guide covers the three main options — deck-mounted pylons, transom ski bars, and tow harnesses — with installation guidance for each.
A tow pylon is a vertical post, typically stainless steel or aluminum, that bolts through the cockpit floor near the center of the boat. The height raises the tow point above the gunwale, which keeps the rope clear of passengers and gives the rider an upward pull angle. Pylons come in fixed and removable styles — removable pylons use a deck-mounted base plate with a locking pin, allowing you to pull the post out when not towing.
Installation: The pylon base plate bolts through the deck with stainless steel hardware. Backing plates — large stainless washers or a solid plate beneath the deck — are essential to spread the load. Without backing plates, the bolts can pull through fiberglass under the dynamic loads of towing. Seal all bolt holes with marine sealant (3M 4200 or equivalent) to prevent water intrusion into the deck core.
A ski bar mounts horizontally across the transom, usually just above the waterline. It provides a lower tow point than a pylon, which is better for traditional water skiing where you want a flat, direct pull rather than an upward pull. Ski bars bolt to the transom using through-bolted brackets with stainless hardware and backing plates on the inside.
Ski bars also double as a convenient handle for boarding from the swim platform and a mounting point for flag holders and rope storage.
The simplest and most affordable option is a tow harness — a Y-shaped rope or strap that clips to two transom eyes and meets at a central ring where the tow rope attaches. Harnesses distribute the pull evenly across two points, reducing stress on any single fitting. They require no permanent installation and work with the existing hardware on virtually any boat.
When choosing a harness, ensure it is rated for the number of riders you plan to tow. A harness rated for a single skier will not handle the loads of a three-person tube.

Regardless of which tow point you choose, the installation quality determines both safety and longevity. Here are the universal principles that apply to every tow point installation.
Backing plates are non-negotiable. Any through-bolt that carries towing loads must have a substantial backing plate on the underside of the mounting surface. A single washer is not enough — use a stainless steel plate at least 3/16 inch thick that spans the full bolt pattern. The backing plate distributes the load across a wide area of the fiberglass or aluminum structure, preventing pull-through under the dynamic shock loads of towing.
Marine sealant on every hole. Every hole drilled through a boat's deck or transom is a potential water intrusion point. Apply 3M 4200 (semi-permanent) or 5200 (permanent) marine sealant around every bolt before tightening. The sealant fills the gap between the hardware and the fiberglass, preventing water from wicking into the core material. Core rot from unsealed bolt holes is one of the most expensive structural repairs in boating.
Use stainless steel hardware exclusively. Zinc-plated steel bolts corrode in the marine environment, weakening the mounting over time. Grade 316 stainless steel is ideal for any hardware that may contact saltwater. Grade 304 is acceptable for freshwater-only applications. Never mix metals — dissimilar metals in contact with each other in a wet environment create galvanic corrosion that accelerates failure.
Load-test before first use. After installation, tie the tow rope to the new tow point and have someone in the water hold the rope taut while you slowly apply throttle. Listen for creaking, watch for movement, and verify that the mounting is solid before putting a rider on the other end. A five-minute load test catches loose bolts and inadequate backing plates before they become dangerous failures at speed.
Seasonal inspection. At the start of each season, crawl under the deck or inside the gunwale and visually inspect every bolt, nut, and backing plate on your tow point. Look for corrosion, loosening, or cracking. Tighten any loose hardware and replace anything that shows signs of fatigue. The forces involved in towing are cyclical and can loosen hardware over time, especially on boats that see heavy use.
