Voltage tells you what the electrical system is doing right now. A proper battery monitor estimates what has gone into and out of the battery over time. If you only need a quick starting-battery sanity check, voltage may be enough. If you run a lithium house bank, inverter, refrigerator, trolling motor, or long electronics sessions, state-of-charge tracking becomes far more useful.
What a voltmeter is good at
A basic voltmeter is ideal for quick checks: is the battery obviously low, is the alternator or charger raising system voltage, and did the voltage sag unusually when a load switched on? It is inexpensive, easy to glance at, and useful on almost every boat.
What a battery monitor adds
A shunt-based monitor measures current flow and can track consumed amp-hours, charging current, historical lows, and an estimated state of charge after calibration. That is the information you want when the battery is supporting real house loads for hours rather than simply starting an engine.
Which one should you buy?
For a simple starting battery, install a clear voltmeter before adding complexity. For a house bank or lithium system, a shunt monitor is the better tool. On a cruising or fishing boat with both starting and house banks, using a monitor on the house bank plus a simple voltage readout for the start bank is a sensible split.
Installation costs people forget
The monitor itself is only part of the job. A shunt must be placed so essentially every load and charge source passes through it on the negative side. Budget for cable, lugs, fusing where required, and a clean mounting location. Bad installation creates misleading readings.
